eBay's image rules are more permissive than Amazon's and tighter than Etsy's, which creates confusion for new resellers. White or neutral backgrounds are strongly recommended but not required, borders and frames are banned on the primary image, and URLs, promotional text, price callouts, and promotional watermarks trigger Picture Policy enforcement — which in practice means the primary image gets replaced with a warning until the seller re-uploads. The technical floor is 500 px on the longest side as an auto-reject threshold, 1600 px to activate the zoom/enlarge viewer that buyers actually use for collectibles and refurb, and a 12 MB per-image cap. JPEG is the most reliable ingestion format across ebay.com, ebay.co.uk, ebay.de, and ebay.com.au; HEIC and AVIF are newer and occasionally fail on older mobile browsers, which is why this preset normalises every export to JPEG sRGB.

The eBay seller audience splits cleanly between the C2C declutterer shooting on a phone and the power-seller running a full photo station at home. eBay's own mobile app ships a decent in-flow background remover and an AI-generated backdrop library (Studio, Surface, Outside), which handles a single photo well — but it does not scale to the weekend batch of fifty or a hundred items that a serious reseller puts through. The wedge this preset fills is desktop batch: shoot on Saturday, process the whole folder on Sunday, bulk-upload via Turbo Lister or the Sell Your Item form on Monday. Reflective items (jewellery, chrome, glass, phones) are the one common exception to the white-background default — eBay's own seller tips acknowledge that dark or neutral backdrops handle reflection better than pure white.

Why zoom and clean framing matter on eBay specifically

eBay traffic overlaps heavily with Google Shopping, which pulls product imagery from eBay's primary slots into its own feed. A low-resolution primary image, a border, or a promotional overlay reduces both in-platform search placement and outbound Google Shopping impressions. 1600 px sizing unlocks the enlarge viewer that buyers use to inspect condition on trading cards, vintage, and refurb — three of the categories where reseller margins are thinnest. Consistent framing across the twenty-four photo slots signals a professional seller, which feeds Top Rated Seller qualification and directly affects buyer trust.
