Passport photo background rules, and why not to edit yours

Most passport authorities want a plain, light background, and the US, UK and Canada also prohibit edited photos, so the background has to be right when the photo is taken. This page sums up the official rules. The tool puts a plain white background behind a photo: use it where an edited background is allowed, such as a profile picture or a team page, not for a passport photo.

What this page gives you

1

The official rules, with sources

The country table on the tool page lists what each authority asks for, including the background, the print size and other rules, and names the official source on every row. Requirements change, so check your own authority's photo page before you take the photo.

2

A plain white background, applied automatically

Drop in a photo and the tool removes the original background and puts plain white behind the subject. You can choose a different background in the editor. Use it where an edited background is allowed: the US, the UK and Canada all prohibit edited passport photos.

3

Free download, no sign-up

Download the result free, with no watermark and no account. Your original, full-resolution image never leaves your device, and nothing is stored.

How to get a passport photo background right

1

Check your authority's rules

Start with your passport authority's own photo page, or the country table on the tool page. The background color, the size and the editing rules differ by country, and the US, the UK and Canada all prohibit edited photos.

2

Take the photo against the right background

Stand several feet in front of a plain wall in the color your authority asks for, with even light on your face, so your shadow stays off the wall. If the background comes out wrong, take a new photo or go to a photo studio. Don't fix it in software: Canada lists "changing the background, including removing shadows" as an alteration.

3

Use the tool only where edits are allowed

For a photo that allows an edited background, such as a profile picture or a team-page headshot, drop it into the tool. It removes the original background and puts plain white behind the subject, and you download the result free.

When to use the tool, and when not to

Profile pictures and team pages

Where no rule forbids editing, such as a profile picture, a team or About page, or a staff directory, a plain white background gives every photo the same clean look.

Not for a US, UK or Canadian passport

All three prohibit edited passport photos. The US says: "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence." The UK requires photos "unaltered by computer software", and Canada lists "changing the background, including removing shadows" as an alteration. Take a new photo instead.

Visa photos: check the visa rules

Visa photo rules can differ from passport rules, and some also ban editing. Canada's visitor visa photo rules say: "If the photographs are digital, they must not be altered in any way." Follow the official visa photo page of the country you are applying to.

Other official photos: ask first

Before you edit a photo for an ID card, a license, or an exam or job application, check the rules of whoever asked for it. If they want an unedited photo, take a new one instead of changing the background.

Passport photo backgrounds, in plain English

Every passport authority publishes its own photo rules. Most want a plain, light background, but the exact shade differs: the US accepts plain white or off-white, a printed UK photo needs plain cream or light grey, and Canada wants plain white or light-colored. The US, the UK and Canada also share a ban on editing. The US says: "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence." The UK requires photos "unaltered by computer software", and Canada lists "changing the background, including removing shadows" as an alteration.

So for a passport photo, the background has to be right when the photo is taken. Stand several feet in front of a plain wall of the right color, light your face evenly from the front, and if the background comes out wrong, take a new photo or go to a photo studio. India needs no photo at all at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK); District Passport Cells, Speed Post Centres and Citizen Service Centres need a printed color photo with a plain white background. Check your authority's own photo page before you take the photo.

What the tool on this page is for

The tool removes a photo's background and puts plain white behind the subject, free, with no sign-up and no watermark. That suits a profile picture, a team or About page, or any photo where nobody has ruled out an edited background. It is not for a passport photo: the US, the UK and Canada all prohibit edited photos, and other authorities may too, so check the official rules first. Only the issuing authority decides whether a photo is accepted. Your original, full-resolution image never leaves your device, and nothing is stored.

Passport photo questions

Can I use a photo with an edited background for a passport?
Not for a US, UK or Canadian passport. The US says: "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence." The UK requires photos "unaltered by computer software", and Canada lists "changing the background, including removing shadows" as an alteration. Don't use a background remover, ours included, on a passport photo. If the background is wrong, take a new photo in front of a better wall, or go to a photo studio. For any other country, check the official photo rules before you edit anything.
What size should a passport photo be?
Each country sets its own: 2x2 inches (51x51mm) in the US, 45mm high by 35mm wide for a printed UK photo, and 50mm wide by 70mm high in Canada. In India, applications at District Passport Cells, Speed Post Centres and Citizen Service Centres need a 4.5cm by 3.5cm photo, and none is needed at a Passport Seva Kendra. Get the size right when the photo is taken and printed, and check your authority's page for the head-size rule.
Which countries want a white background, and which want another color?
The US accepts plain white or off-white, Canada plain white or light-colored, and India's paper applications plain white. The UK wants plain cream or light grey on a printed photo and a plain light-colored background on a digital one. France forbids a white background, as the country table on the tool page shows. Whatever your authority asks for, get it right when the photo is taken: the US, the UK and Canada prohibit changing the background afterwards.
Does the photo need to be printed, or can I upload a digital file?
It depends on the country and on how you apply. The UK takes a digital photo for online applications, and printed UK photos must be "printed to a professional standard". Printed Canadian passport photos must be taken by a commercial photographer or photo studio, and photos printed at home are not accepted. India needs no photo at a Passport Seva Kendra, and where a photo is needed, its booklet says: "Photograph in computer print will not be accepted." Check your authority's application page before you print.
Is the tool free?
Yes: no paid plan, no credits, no watermark and no sign-up. Your original, full-resolution image never leaves your device, and nothing is stored. Being free doesn't make an edited photo acceptable for an official document, though: for a passport, submit an unedited photo that meets your authority's rules.
Can I take the photo myself?
It depends on the country. Canada requires a commercial photographer or photo studio. The UK lets you take a digital photo on your own device during an online application, but you'll need someone to help you, and it says photos from a booth or shop are more likely to be approved. India needs no photo at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). Wherever you take it, don't edit it afterwards.
